How would you have a legal marriage if the marriage is not legally filed?

      As Bay said, no........

Why would marriage affect your insurance? Sounds like your bf found a bizarre way of saying "I don't want to marry you." Afraid of losing insurance... that's a new one.

I suppose you could have a committment ceremony, but it is not a legal marriage.

Why would being married affect her disability benefits. She won't be any less disabled, and he cannot provide her with insurance, so why would she lose it?

That is an honest question that I don't know the answer to, not just me being Ms. Snotty Pants.

If her spouse earns enough money, it might reduce the amount that she recieves, depending on what she recieves.

I know that alot of elderly couples do not marry for this exact reason. However, without more information, it's impossible to tell if this is a bonafide possibility for her.

It saddens me to know that people can't be happy do to money. It's sad, and when it comes to their attention its to late, knowing that something could have been done in to prevent such a thing happening.

By the way, I'm new to this forum.

If your state insurance is income based, ANY income you have, INCLUDING a spouse's income will affect your benefits. The best thing you can do is talk to your state caseworker and ask.

As for your actual question, as others have said- the answer is no. in addition even if it were possible to be legally married and not let the state know, that is FRAUD, and it can carry a VERY long prison sentence.
However, if your BF doesn't have a large income, there's a possibility that you might still qualify even if you were married, so be sure to talk to your caseworker about it.

On your other thread I noticed that you might be filing for social security, if you will be getting SSI (rather than SSDI) any HOUSEHOLD income will affect your SSI amount.
