  • Paycheck Lost and now it's Found

I work in California for a marketing company. As I was cleaning out my desk, I found a payroll check from 2002 for over $200. I made a copy of the check and gave the original to my supervisor. I requested that a new check be issued since the work had been completed. Now my supervisor has told me that his boss may or may not give me a new check. Is the company required to issue me a new check?

    2002 Check

The funds may have been turned over to the state. Have you checked on the website for the California State Controller's Office at: http://www.controller.ca.gov/col/ucp/index.shtml I'm not sure of the timeframe by which the unclaimed pay must be submitted to the state but the employer is not allowed to keep it. If you don't find the funds on the controller's site, then you may wish to file a claim with the state Department of Labor Standards Enforcement. Its website may be found at: http://www.dir.ca.gov/DLSE/dlse.html
