  • Exempt employees and leave without pay in Virginia

I work for a multi-national company based in Minnesota. I work in Virginia. I am a salaried, exempt employee. Because of the Government shut down and because we are a government contractor, my boss is asking us to take leave without pay and telling us we cannot take it in less than one week segments. Is this legal?

Yes, as an exempt employee the employer has to pay you in any workweek that you work, so that is why they would require a whole week. And your employer controls your schedule.

Agree, not illegal unless you have a binding employment contract to the contrary of your employer's action.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. Leo Buscaglia
