Paying union dues with no union protection - Ohio

I was recently discharged from a position where I was a member of the union (Communications Workers of America). However, they took out dues but since I was probationary, I received no representation, benefits or protections. Is that commonplace??

While you were working you DID, in fact, receive benefit from being a member of the union. It was the union that negotiated the contract you were working under.

agree with PG that you were receiving whatever was previously negotiated even if you were probationary and not eligible for some benefits.
