  • Student intership & payment for add'l requested hours Wisconsin

We currently have a student intern through a local community college that is not paid an hourly wage for the time we spend giving her on-the-job training. We would like her to pick up a few additional hours for us on Saturdays, a shift our employees prefer not to work, and pay her for these additional hours, realizing that students are always struggling for money. Is this legal or does it create a conflict according to the FLSA?

    Anxiously awaiting a response.

You can. Just make sure she is not performing the same duties during the week. If she is clearly there for training as approved by a school program, that is fine. If she is actually performing work for you whether during the week or on weekends, that is another story.
I post with the full knowledge and support of my employer, though the opinions rendered are my own and not necessarily representative of their position. In other words, I'm a free agent.
