  • Personal Days - Maryland

Our employer sent a memo stating that personal days are now disallowed. However, when we were hired, it was part of our benefits package. I have three personal days that I acquired a few months back for my yearly anniversary.

Do they have the right to take away paid days off at the drop of the hat, especially days that you have already earned?

Barring an enforceable employment contract or collective bargaining agreement which state otherwise, an employer is free to redefine its PTO plan (i.e. personal days). The fact that you've been given advance warning prior to its use satisfies the company's requirement of notification.

I understand that you'd "prefer" the change not happen; but the change, in itself, is not unlawful.

Unfortunately, it is legal. Personal Days are not considered wages in MD.
I post with the full knowledge and support of my employer, though the opinions rendered are my own and not necessarily representative of their position. In other words, I'm a free agent.
