  • Labor Question Iowa

I was wondering how long an employer is legally obligated to hold onto a paycheck after it was issued. It has been around a month.

The Iowa Wage Payment Collection Act requires that employers generally must pay wages at least in monthly, semimonthly, or biweekly installments on regular paydays that are at consistent intervals from each other and that are designated in advance.

If you haven't gotten you pay check on your designated payday, put in a claim with your state's "DOL." Have you asked your employer why you have not been paid?

Are you the employer? If so you hold the paycheck for three years and then turn it into the state. It then gets posted in those advertised "Great Iowa Treasure Hunt" posters....

Poster could be employer. If so, why has the employee not picked up the check? Do you have an address to send/mail it to?

FYI Betty - Iowa law changed about a year or so ago. An employer may NOT mail a final paycheck without having a signed authorization. At the time the law changed, my then employer had everyone sign a simple form authorizing the mailing of a final check.

If this employer does not have such an authorization, it is now illegal to mail a paycheck to the employee.

          Talk about goofy twisted logic....
