  • Lunch breaks for employees who monitor mentally ill individuals

Hello. I am a mental health worker in IL, and I am part of the nursing staff responsible for maintaining the milieu of emotionally disordered children. We recently had our lunch breaks permanently eliminated without explanation. However, our supervisor repeated that shifts are now 8AM-4PM, which protects the hospital under the law that employees must have a break after 7.5 hours. We have to eat with the children, which is a 30 minute period. Furthermore, i am required to attend meetings every Wednesday, which extends the shift by 2 hours. Is my employer in violation of labor law in IL concerning scheduled breaks? Other employees (i.e. teachers) get at least 90 mins away from the children. Unfair? yes...Illegal? Please, any info will help.
