  • Unhealthy working conditions causing sickness... New Jersey

A friend of mine works at a small company and is handicapped. The office that she works in is attached to the manufacturing facility. Working conditions in the office are horrible: the carpets and walls are full of mold, there is no air conditioning in the summer, in the winter dead animals are in the walls and they just leave them there.
Due to a tropical storm, the roof has been leaking and they just put out buckets to collect water. They have no intention of fixing the roof. There are so many fumes that trees next to the warehouse are dying.

She is now suffering from severe allergies (on top of existing medical conditions) and her doctor believes that her breathing and allergies could be caused by the mold at her workplace and she will need to collect disability.

What actions could be taken against the employer, and are they breaking the law in any way?

Agreed - your friend should contact OSHA and the county health department. She may also file a worker's compensation claim with her employer for her related medical problem(s).

She can probably contact OHSA or the county health dept. She might want
to try & find other employment if possible.
