Anybody here would like to take this case? Mr. Harris claims to
have discovered a short, elementary proof of Fermat's Last Theorem.

Good Grief, Charlie Brown!.......

If your thesis were valid it should be enough for you to
know that you have solved a puzzle. Since that knowledge
is not satisfactory to you and you're demanding others
accept it you're into something other than a math proof.

True mathematical research is like good works, its own
reward. In your case I can understand why it is you've
not felt satisfaction in the mathematics.

Your (threatened) suit taken before a judge starts out
with opposing counsel saying, "Your honor, Mr. Harris
states he is an amateur mathematician. As such he has
no financial interest in the stated opinions of others
relating to his hobby."

Judge: "No cause of action. Case dismissed."

Anger never trumps logic.

Please advise the good folks in sci.physics that they should
sieze the amateur number theorist by the short hairs and
unceremoniously ride the bum over to alt.fermatslasttheorem,
thereby restoring order to the usenet universe and returning
sci.physics to its more serious discussions concerning
perpetual motion and such other important matters.

If the amateur wants an opinion concerning his proof, he
should send the proof in a plain brown wrapper, postage prepaid
to Andrew "I don't believe Fermat had a proof" Wiles, the
man who is believed to have proved the theorem.

As for suing people who deny validity of a proof.... stupidity
is no substitute for logic, contrary learned opinion is
not slander in most places, and a lay opinion of that kind
can hardly be regarded as harmful to a professional reputation.
In short.... he should see a lawyer in his local about that.
Mention my name for a discount. :D

========Fermat's Last Theorem========================
Translated from latin .scribbled in the margins of Pierre de Fermat's
copy of the ancient Greek text "Arithmetica" by Diophantus, found
after he died in 1665.
"It is impossible for a cube to be the sum of two cubes, a fourth
power to be the sum of two fourth powers, or in general for any number
that is a power greater than the second to be the sum of two like
powers. I have discovered a truly marvelous demonstration of this
proposition that this margin is too narrow to contain."

Well as everyone on this board knows, including Harris himself,
Harris isn't the least bit motivated by an innocent curiosity fueled
by an inate intellect. Just like several others around here, he's got
problems with society failing to lick the **** off his boots and so
puts on a show- a "talk" show.
