View Full Version : Damned helicopter pilots flying directly over my house

Can I do anything about daily flights of helicopters over my house? The
damned assholes fly not 100 ft above my house. I don't know if they are
training or ferrying VIPs to lunch. I guess they are military helicopters,
twin blade Chinooks, brown unmarked. Tonight I spotted one doing
cartwheels in the air (this time it was a least 1000 ft up), so now I know
they don't have to fly so low. This has been going on for years.
Southeastern Virginia.

Thanks for any help.

no markings means either government or military.
all you can do is take some video then send it to the FAA and complain.
Unless landing, they're supposed to fly at a minimum altitude.
Not sure but it might be like 500 feet for a helicopter.
now if they would run in "whisper mode" you'd never hear them.

I believe even for military helicopter pilots (who follow FAA rules) is 500 foot floor when flying. Complain to FAA or local military base.

Thanks for everyone who responded. I guess I'll try to scrounge up a video
camera and complain to the FAA.

Aircraft operate in three scenarios: taking off from a runway or helipad,
approaching a runway or a helipad, and enroute. When aircraft, both fixed
wing and helicopters, are either taking off or landing, there are no
minimum altitude requirements. When enroute, fixed wing aircraft must
maintain minimum altitudes over congested areas by 1,000 feet and other
areas by 500 feet. Helicopters, on the other hand, have no minimum
altitude requirements, although they must maintain safe clearance from
obstructions on the ground.

Anybody got any other ideas (besides a well deserved RPG)?

Is it possible to legally INSTALL obstructions on the ground a few
hundred feet high to keep the helicopters a little further away?
Say, some really tall trees. Or an antenna (it may help if you
have an amateur radio license, but is there anything wrong with
wanting really good TV reception by putting your dish WAY above the
trees?). Or a really tall steeple on your house. Or a bird house
for eagles.

You'll probably need some kind of permit especially if it's in air
traffic lanes, and you may have to put up a warning light on the
obstruction. (I'm not sure how tall something has to be before
that requirement kicks in - ask. Where you are in relation to
runways probably matters if you're close to an airport.) Remember,
you're not designing a death trap for helicopters. You just want
them a couple of hundred feet higher. Trees might provide some
dampening of the noise, too, at least when they have leaves. And
don't forget about lightning protection for yourself, if
it's an antenna or a metal tower. And make sure it's designed so
it won't end up in your neighbor's house with the first good
windstorm.
