California Up For Adoption
Feb 18, 2004 10:22 am US/Eastern
LAFAYETTE, Calif. (AP) For just over $1 a day, California citizens can adopt
their state -- and help get rid of its debt.
A man in this San Francisco Bay area suburb has initiated a campaign to pay for
the $15 billion bond Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to help balance
the state budget.
Tom MacDonald, 63, is asking each of California's 35 million residents to
donate $1.21 every day for one year -- a total of $441.65.
"It's a gift, a gift from the constituents of this state to help solve the
problems they helped to create," MacDonald said.
Critics of the proposed bond issue, which is on the March 2 ballot as
Proposition 57, say it would force future generations to pay around $30 billion
for current borrowing.
"That's ridiculous," MacDonald said. "I thought, 'We just need to pay off this
thing now."'
The money will be collected in an "I-Love-CA-Fund," an account accessible only
to Schwarzenegger and state Controller Steve Westly, MacDonald said.
MacDonald, who owns and operates six retirement communities in the Bay Area,
spent nearly $3,000 for full-page ads in local newspapers -- but his primary
method of fundraising is word of mouth.

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail . . . but, a true friend will
be sitting next to you saying, "Damn . . . that was fun!"
