the national reserves as past presidents have.
Cut healthcare benefits for war veterans.

Dissolved more international treaties than any president in U.S. history.
My presidency is the most secretive and unaccountable of any in U.S. history.

First U.S. president to establish a secret shadow government.
Took the biggest world sympathy for the U.S. after 9/11, and in less than a

president in U.S. history.
In a little over two years created the most divided country in decades,
possibly the most divided the U.S. has ever been since the Civil War.

I was under the impression that the Iragi people were not too happy
about having our army there, DICTATING their lives. BUt I'm sure
the families of the thousands of men women and children who we killed
while liberating them are really quite grateful and once they get over
grieving the loss of their loved onces, they'll be the first to tell
us.

Honey, you need to read more.

Kurds are VERY happy -- Saddam's gone and won't be back, Saddam's thugs
are out, and they can pretty much live as they want. They're going to
have some degree of autonomy in the new republic so they're in the
catbird seat. Aid and trade is going well -- read a report about some
Kurd ex-pat med students who returned after the war, and their first
comments were along the lines of "home looks like Europe!"

Shi'a are happy for now, and they're very realistic. Saddam's gone and
he'll eventually get justice. Most of the Shi'a are very secular and
while they respect Sistani (who is one of the few people who directly
stood up to Saddam in Iraq and lived) greatly, they're not interested in
a theocracy. They would like to get on with their lives and their
country.

Sunnis are a mixed lot, and a good number are pissed -- they were the
top dogs under Saddam and now they'll be 3rd. Nope, not happy.

Finally, remember: fewer people are dead now, even with the war losses,
than would have been if Saddam had remained in power. Think the Shi'a
and Kurds know that? I'll bet they do.

Actually, I've heard that there's a bit of a problem brewing. In the
pre-war era, the no-fly-zones pretty much gave Kurds the freedom to
run their areas as though they were independent. Now, there's some
concern as to what form United Iraq will take, and what their power in
it will be. What they'd like is an independent Kurdistan, which would
of course give Turkey the heebie-jeebies.

In areas like Kirkut, where Saddam dispossessed Kurds and planted
Arabs, the dispossessed are returning and evicting the immigrants. The
problem is, the Arabs who moved there were pretty much innocent of
anything except moving to a new city, and they've built their own
houses -- which the Kurds now want to take over. The Arabs who are
forced out are pissed off. The US Army is not too sure how to handle
this with justice and the least bad blood.

Kurds are Sunni, but not Arab.
There's Kurd vs. Arab, Shia vs Sunni, all brewing there.
And we can't count on secular Shia, either; we can hope, but it really
doesn't look that way. The main powers in the Shia community are
religious. The Iraqi mess is so complicated that not even an Indian
Prime Minister could deal with it...

I've read the same things and I shouldn't imply that it's all heaven
there; it isn't. But the Kurds are very well disposed towards us right
now.

Lots of Kurds would like an independent country, and many would like to
unite all the Kurdish people, not just in Turkey but also in Syria and
Iran. That would be a major, major problem right now. Turkey and Iran
both would go to war to stop such a thing.

I've read the stories about both Kirkuk and Mosul where the Arabs are
getting booted. They have my sympathy to a point; they didn't go there
asking for trouble, and many were forced there by Sammy.

Latest news on the wire is that Sistani will gracefully climb down and
claim victory, and some formula will be found on elections. Which proves
that Sistani is a long-term player and won't antagonize the US. Very
shrewd man.

Yes, sounds like a good guy. Hope things stay that way, though. One
good guy floating on an unstable situation isn't the redemption of the
nation.

INTERNATIONAL 02.21.2004 Saturday

Shiite Leader Sistani Threatens Intifada Against U.S.

Iraqi Shiite Leader Seyyid Ali Al-Sistani yesterday warned that he would
call for an intifada (uprising) if American soldiers stayed in Iraq
after the handover of power on June 30, 2004. He also insisted that
there should be a significant role for the Shiite in the future
administration of the country, as they make up the majority of the
population.

Sistani spoke to the German magazine Der Spiegel and said: "The U.S.
presence in Iraq should not be prolonged. The Iraqi public knows how to
act. If the U.S. presence is drawn out longer than necessary, I will
call for an intifada." The necessary posters reportedly have already
been printed and are awaiting distribution to every corner of the country.

Sostani's comments come in the wake of Commander of the Coalition Ground
Forces in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez's statement on Wednesday that
American troops might continue their deployment in Iraq for years to
come and U.S.-Appointed Administrator to Iraq Paul Bremer's request
yesterday that coalition members to maintain a presence in Iraq until
the end of December 2005.

The U.S. administration has reportedly dispensed with the idea of having
pre-elections before June 30 and is currently working to expand the
Iraqi Temporary Governing Council (TGC). The Washington Post has
reported that as part of the TGC enlargement the number of council
members would be increased from 25 to 125. The newly expanded TGC would
then continue its investigations until the national elections.

'America Gave up Pre-Elections'

Sistani noted that the United Nations (UN) has charged the U.S. with the
administration of Iraq until June 30, 2004, and he reported that the UN
should monitor whether power will be handed over to the Iraqis. Sistani
also demanded that preparations for the elections be finished as soon as
possible. Additionally, he requested a guarantee from the U.N. that the
elections would not be delayed and that Constitution would be based on
the Sheri'a.
