Baby Boy Abandoned by Teenage Mother

Detroit police are searching for a newborn baby who was abandoned by his
teenage mother. The young mother’s inconsistent story is making the search
for the child difficult.

Officers are no longer hopeful of finding the baby boy alive. Officials have
sent the teenage mother to the Wayne County Youth Home, in the hopes that
confinement will convince the girl to tell them the exactly what she had did
with her baby.

The 16-year-old, who remains unidentified, gave birth to the child last week in
her home on Detroit’s eastside. She claimed to have left the baby in a garage
near her home, and also in a dumpster on the way to her high school. Police
have searched both places, but found no trace of the child.

Det. Barbara Simon, of the Detroit Police, told Action News, "We have decided
to hold the mother because we have evidence that it was appropriate to place
her in the Wayne County Youth Home? She had the baby several days ago,
according to the mother. We don’t think the baby is alive? All I can tell you
is [the father] is a friend of the family’s. That’s all I can tell you
about the father right now."

Investigators are continuing to question the mother and other members of the
family. Although they desperately want to find that baby boy, they say they can
still press charges, even if the baby is never found.
