Finally got a job three years after layoff. I will not be making much
(about half my previous salary) but definitely happy I got it.
Until recenyly I was thinking of filing for bankruptcy. Now, I would
like to find one of those debt companies that negotitate a payment
plan/how much,etc..
I was told I had to be careful, because some of those organizatin are
phony.
-Anyone can recommend a legitimate one? if not...
-How do I go about finding one? if you know
-Are there some that are non profit/consumer orientd, truly helping
filks?
-Do people who did what I am about to do succeed in nogotiating the
debt, payment plan if debt is high? $38,000 in my case and all in
credt cards.
-Most ads say they can eliminate 50 to 75% of the debt. true?
Finally, any help/info on how to go about doing this is very very much
appretiated.
Thank you very much

First, for debt settlements, you are required to pay off in one large
sum of money in cash. If you do not have cash, your creditors will
not even negotiate.
If you decide to settle, you can do it yourself. Just make sure that
you have a written agreement if a settlement is reached.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service is a free, non profit organization
that negotiates finance charges with your card holders and puts you on a
monthly budget.
Once a month, you must send the CCCS a money order in the amount
specified.
When your debt is paid off, make sure that you ask them for a
"Completion Letter" so that this does not look like a dark mark on your
credit report.
Good luck,
Katey

Consumer Credit Counseling Service and Debt Settlement Company are two
very different things.
Consumer Credit Counseling Service does not do debt settlement.

I would not use any of the "companies" out there at all. As Kim says..do it
yourself.
