Overwhelmed by medical bills in late 2002 I had to file chapter 7 BK.
Since then I have applied for and gotten 2 unsecured credit cards
where I have never been late and when I had to use them did so
prudently and made payments in a timely manner. I Recently I filled
out an application for a major bank and today the HR lady called and
wished to interview me. She does not know about the BK. I imagine
banks pull credit reports on candidates. 2 positions she she said she
was interested in was the Consumer Banker, IE opening new accounts and
selling services. And loan specialist. I have a feeling I am wasting
my time and hers but would really like the position. Am I
Pipe-dreaming?. Would appreciate advice and comments from everyone out
there on the WWW who has faced a similar situation.

Hello,
My sincere advice is to put off the interview. I did not file BK but
lost a job offer because of Bad Credit. The interview went well and was
selected for a full time job, however, I was asked to fill in Credit &
Security Clearance application form granting the employer to check the
credit report as well as security report. The credit report came back
BAD CREDIT. Immediately the HR called me and said they are revoking the
offer because of BAD CREDIT. I cannot penetrate into any type of
retail/banking sectors where they do check credit report before offering
a permanent job. So please do think twice before proceeding.
My 0.02 cents advice. By the way, I am from Toronto {Canada}. I am not
sure how it works in U.S.

You might be able to sway their opinion since you filed BK due to
medical problems. For the most part, anyone filing BK can't get a job
at a financial institution or as cashiers etc because they think you
will steal,
The really funny thing is that the executives and boards of directors
of these same companies are thieves themselves.

My best friend lost her husband to complications of diabetes about 7 years
ago and they filed BK right before he died because of medical bills. She has
worked her butt off in retail for several years and applied for and was
interviewed by a local bank for a better job. She was honest and told them
what had happened and she was denied the job.
It's crappy but it happens every day.

I filed 12/2001 and got a job in a _major_ bank 3/2002 (not even three
_months_).
In all probability, the Bank has already pulled a credit report.
(Aside (the laws of irony are liberally construed...) the banking job was
working out delinquent loans and working with Bankrupt customers...)
This is my experience. Be wary of advice without it ;-)

I've read the responses, and the first thing I would do If I knew there
might be a red flag is to tell them about it... Tell them that
you filed due to medican issues that were beyond your control.
That way when they do the check they will not be surprised and
pass you over for someone else.

You might want to look at Bankruptcy Code
section 525(b), which prohibits discrimination
by private employers because of a bankruptcy
or because a debtor was insolvent prior to a
bankruptcy.
A few years ago one of my bankruptcy clients
was laid off after she filed. When the bank
was informed about section 525(b) they were
able to find several jobs from which my client
was offered her choice.
Of course, your mileage may vary.
Hope this helps. Good luck to you.
Kindest regards,
Tom

They told me that if I did not hear from them by Friday I could assume
the position was filled. Today is Sunday. That is the way it always
is. The burden of proof falls on the applicant and it is almost
impossible to prove when all they do is peek at the credit report. Jim
Crow is alive and well and living in the job market................
