My BK was discharged last month. I just got this offer from First Premier -
9.9% fixed rate on purchases - that caught my eye. Upon close scrutiny, I
find the following charges: $95.00 Program Fee (One-Time),Account Set-up fee
of $29.00 (One-Time), Annual Fee of $48.00, Participation fee of $6.00
(every month), Credit Line Increase Fee of $25.00 (each time THEY increase
your limit).
I don't want a credit card but I need one for business travel. Are these
fees typical for post bankruptcy credit card companies?

I've seen many like this, they just want to take advantage. If you the money
place into a scured card, I'd go with a secured card from
http://www.apbank.com/ . They seem pretty reasonable and after a few emails
with them, they don't report the the C/A as a secured card either. But if
you want to browse other cards, try this list
http://www.bankrate.com/brm/rate/cc_ratehome.asp?cc_online=0&hAboutType=C&product=cc&prodtype=cc&web=brm&R1=1&card_type=Secured&card_class=All&cc_freq=1

Premier is one of the worst. Did get a card through Household Bank for a
$39 annual fee. Interest is 18.9%. Very limited credit line ($500), but
that's fine. Use it a little and pay it off every month. They're not
getting me in their trap again. You can apply online and get instant
approval.

Been lurking around for a while now... I've been through BK and we're on our
way to recovery, an excellent card for post BK is Bank of America Secured
credit card. After one year of on-time payments it becomes unsecured. just
thought I'd share.

Good luck

Funny, I was just looking at their website tonight. I did not apply
because it says to qualify for a secured card, you must never have filed BK.

Do they make acceptions? I will call tomorrow, but I don't want to
waste a hard inquiry if it is auto-decline due to BK.

My Bank Of America, in Washington, has had the disclaimer on the application
for a secured card for over a year. I never tried for a secured card for
that reason.

A related question..... I am in the process of filing Chapter 13, and I just got my court date, which will be in mid March.
My question is that my bank has provided me a Check/Debit/ATM card. Will there be any problems with keeping and using that? The reason I ask is because the card has a Visa logo on it. I can't see why it would be a problem because it is only a means to access my checking account funds, just like a check.
Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?
Thanks!

Carol

It's no problem using an ATM card, even one with a Visa logo on it. You
aren't using it to incur debt, only to deduct money you already have from
your checking account.

Thanks, Brett! That's what I figured, and makes sense to me. But nothing surprises me anymore, and I wondered becauase of the Visa logo on it, and the fact that the bank said they had to do a credit check when I opened the account.

And thanks for all your help and advise here too. It has been so much appreciated, and I wanted to tell you!

Take the time to checkout Orchard Bank. I was quite skeptical in the
beginning, but 6 months after my discharge (I didn't apply for anything
during that time), I did an on-line application. Start small (my limit
requested was $1000 -- and granted).....and just wait a while. STAY UP TO
DATE ON YOUR PAYMENTS (or just only charge what you can pay each month)!!!

I filed Chap 7 last fall. And one of my creditors is Citibank during
my BK. I defaulted on my Citibank credit card for almost $30K .

I also have a Check/Debit/ATM card from Citibank. My Citibank
Check/Debit/ATM card also has a "MasterCard" logo on it. I have no
problem using the card before and after my Chapter 7 discharge.

Hey good to see Brett still hanging out.

Well, I was going through a bankruptcy about 15 months ago, and I was
scared and constantly researching every detail of bankruptcies...and
worried I would be forced into a Chapter 13...but I wasn't. I filed a
Chapter 7, and because of that, I was able to get married and lots of
things.

thank God for bankruptcy.

OK, now, to the subject at hand for about 9 months I didn't think
about credit, but I then applied for an Orchard Bank MasterCard, got a
$500 limit. I never come close to the limit or paying late. I pay off
about $200 - $300 per month, I pay twice a month (free electronic
transfers from my bank account) and I kind of use it for convenience
not to carry a balance.

No problems with them, of course, I never get close to the 'gotcha's'
of getting near your limit or payment date.

One thing, though, is they charge $25 for a limit increase, if you
request it. And I won't pay that charge, so no limit increase. They
say they periodically review (every 1 to 3 months) to offer you a
'free' limit increase...but despite my perfect payment history, no
limit increase yet.

Meanwhile I waited one year to buy a car, but I got one through
Household bank (same as the Orchard Bank ppl)...and WOW, was it a
rip-off. I went in to my credit union and begged them to take the
loan. I got lucky, they did. Instead of $340 a month for 6 years, I
got $295 a month for 5 years. Same balance, that is just the
difference a better interest rate makes.

Finally, Capital One said I was pre-approved. While I don't want two
credit cards I thought, well, I would like one credit card with a
better balance, and plus Capital One had low APR intro rate, and some
extra's like buyer protection.

However, this is interesting, they have a new SCAM for getting you
signed up. AFter you respond to their pre-approval notice, they send
you the card in the mail, with a $200 limit, and they say the limit
will increase after the 1st payment. To an unkown amount. Well for
$49 fee, I don't know if the card is going to be a Orchard Bank
Replacement or not.

I didn't feel adventurous, so I cut up the card, and called them up
and told them I was declining the offer.

Anyone went through the process with Capital One? I would be curious
to know what the final amount was $300? I know it varies, but
c'mon...not that much.

OK, finally...Capital One is a curious company...they treat their
sub-prime customers like crap, but their regular customers, well, they
have a good reputation for treating them well.
