Every time you get a letter from a collection agency about that bill, send
back a letter saying that, pursuant the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
please cease all further communication with you. They'll turf the debt back
to the original creditor. It is unlikely that the original creditor is
going to hire an attorney in your state to try to collect $368 from you.
Don't make any payments at all -- not even five dollars -- because that
starts the clock all over again on the statute of limitations on the debt
and any credit reporting agency information.

I am not a lawyer, but that's what I would do.

news:yUkYa.909$Ps.70758@newsread2.prod.itd.earthli nk.net... I have a question regarding an old medical bill. My now ex wife moved
from Arizona to Wisconsin back in 1998. I didn't get divorced until 1999. Wisconsin is a comunity property state. In the year 2000 she filed backruptcy ch 7. I am now being bothered by a CA for the balance on this medical bill of $ 368.00 If I don't pay this bill can they garnish my
wages and get a judgement against me on this. It has been on my credit report since 2/98. Any suggestions --

The problem with completely ignoring them is that it won't take them off the
case. So, some of them might decide to report the unpaid debt to the credit
reporting agencies. If you get them off the case by using the Fair Debt
Collection Practices Act you reduce or eliminate the chance of them filing a
negative credit report.

Don't waste any of your time trying to correspond at all with them. Let them waste their time calling you. Set your answering machine to 5-6 rings. If you are able, set up your computer so that it will answer your calls. You have permanent records of what they say, how often they call......and maybe you might be able to turn the tables and sue their ***. If $368 is the only debt, then pay it off and get on with your life.
I am speaking about people who are swamped with tens of thousands in
debt, and their credit reports already ruined.

Please.., geeeess!! Buddy.., forget the "credit" report BS!! If you are on
a sinking ship, who gives a damn about who's blowing the whistle!! You
start to save ALL the cash you can get your hands on, make sure you pay the
rent, buy enough food to eat, and have "some kind" of transportation..!
Look! You've just entered the twilight zone of the underground American
economy.., and you are low on ammo, ill trained, and probably an over-weight
old fart not expecting any of this.., now you can sit down on your *** and
wait for the Rupture.., or be like the "Good Servant", and adjust your fire
during the time of Tribulation to come..!!
Don't forget Dr. Maslhof's pyramid of human needs.., read the old
testament..., and cheer up.., others have made it those hard times..!!
Going into dept is like quicksand.., so stop wiggling and start preparing
for the worst every day.., changes are the worst won't happen.., AND STOP
feeling guilty about anything!! Just don't make the same mistakes twice..!!
