The headline confuses me. It has no relevance whatsoever to the
article, which doesn't mention adoption.

Bam's children, Have You Ever Thought About Adoption?
By [no author given]
Dec 31, 2003, 21:53
A baby girl born Friday after the earthquake in Iran will never see
her mother. She died moments after the delivery from injuries she
suffered in the quake. The baby's father also died.
The earthquake in Bam (bam) has left at least 15-hundred children
orphaned. Most of the kids are being taken care of at various child
care centers.
One boy, unaware of his parents' deaths, says his mom and dad are
back in Bam and that they're coming to see him soon.
The head of Iran's State Welfare Organization says a few of the
children being looked after have parents hospitalized in various parts
of the country, but most of them do not.
At least 28-thousand people died in the quake. Another 12-thousand
were hurt.
Seems to me the unnamed author is attempting to connect the dots,
so to speak. These children mentioned in the article, quite logically
will NEED families...ergo, "Have You Ever Thought About Adoption?"

I think it is relevant. It is asking if anyone has considered adoption
because there are thousands of orphaned children due to the earthquake
in Iran. At least that was my take on the article. ------------------------- A good friend will come and bail you out of jail . . . but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn . . . that was fun!" -----Unknown

I guess the above implied to me that they were looking for good
adoptive homes for the orphaned children. Perhaps not well written,
but I guess I got the gist in that the question in the title of the
article pertained to the article itself.

Marley Why not? Not being purposely obtuse, I really don't know.
"Adoption" as it is practiced in the West is not acceptable under Islam.
Kefala--which means
sponsorship-- is the accepted procedure. It could be compared to foster
care or perhaps guardianship practices in the US. (1) in kafala blood
relationships and lineage and identity are not hidden--identity is tied to
lineage unlike the US custom of identity erasure. (2) Under kafala
"adoptees" have no automatic right to inerhtance--inheritance would need to
be specifically written into a will. There are also certain qualifications
regarding the marriage between members of a family where kefala is
practiced.
(3) the "son" etc. are not legal terms, only a phrase used in a
general sense.
Kefala is not recognized by the US State Department/INS as a form of
relationship and in the last few years has caused hardship on Muslims in the
US seeking to remove relatives and other children from orphanages in
Afghanistan (for example) and bringing them to the US. I guess if Mulsims
just behaved themselves and converted to Christianity they could adopt their
underage realatives and get them over here.
After the Russian destruction of Chechnya the child lust crowd were beating
down the doors of the country to bring Chechen children to the US. While
perhaps well intentioned (in some cases) the Chechens (what was left of
them), who are a clan and
lineage based society were not amused. I can guarantee you that if some
entitled USians would have even been allowed to step foot in Chechnya they'd
have had their hands cut off and sent packing.
So, the word "Adoption" in
the rude headline of the day--since it appeared in an English-language
Arabic newspaper, to me, is simply an incitement for more of
this crap. Or maybe it was a bad translation.

in Islam and I have a cold too so I didn't get around to googling yesterday.

I just thought it weird that an Iranian newspaper (even though it is in
