I just got a part time job at a restaurant as a server, this is my fourth serving job and I have never experienced such an awful work enviroment. This is only my 3rd week. It is a sushi restaurant and the last time I worked they made me pay for (2) rolls that someone had delivered to the wrong table and they had to re-make because the table started to eat them. They also said that they will charge me $50 if I lost any of my tickets because they do not have a computer system.

Can they do that?

I have not signed anything stating that they could, nor have they photocopied my driver's license and social security card. I never filled out a W-4. And the kitchen is disgusting.

I want to call the health department, but I am pretty sure they are paying them off as their last score was 100, which would be impossible if someone had seen the kitchen. Can an employee complaint be taken seriously by the NC dept of Foodservices?

I don't know what to do but I am pretty sure I am going to quit soon.

Any advice would be helpful.

They didn't photocopy your I-9 IDs? They aren't required to, although they can if they want to.

Are they deducting from your paycheck for food errors/walkouts, etc.?
The law in SC is a little iffy. Section 41-10-40 (C) only states that they can deduct those items required by law, or they must provide "notification" of other deductions. It might be worth a call to the state DOL to get clarification re: your specific situation. (803) 896-4470
