My husband is a salaried manager for a retail company in Maryland. His company is nationwide, and is large (Fortune 500). He works nights, and is scheduled to work 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. However, lately, he has been told to come in 3 hours early every day and is made to work 12, 14 even 16 hour days every day. This is taking a huge toll on his health, and taking away from our family time. He is not compensated in any way for this, no overtime pay, no comp days, nothing. He is even given a hard time if he wants to take a break to eat. I have been trying to research labor laws, but I am having a difficult time navigating the wordy text and finding a law that applies to him as a salaried / exempt employee. Can anyone tell me if there is anything we can do legally to curb these out of control work hours? Please help!!!

No, there is not. MD does not limit the number of hours even a non-exempt employee can work; no state limits the number of hours an exempt employee can be required to work. Nor does any state require that an exempt employee receive extra compensation or even comp time for working extra hours.

If he is unhappy with the terms of his employment, his recourse is to look for employment elsewhere.
