I'm in Louisiana, I've moved from one apartment to another in the same complex (my wife and I had one for her mom and she moved out so we took it once ours was up). A month after we moved out, we get a bill for $747.13 for the replacement of the apartments carpet because of "pet damage" from our small female cat. When we left they did not inspect it and did not tell us when they did it and this is the first we've been notified. The only people who saw it "damaged" was a maintanence guy and the manager. There were no stains, they said it was strictly smell and there was nothing they could do except replace it. What can I do, I do not have $747 lying around and am about to get out of the military and move back home in 3 months. Please, anyone who can help.

Do you know for sure that the carpet was really replaced or do you suspect the landlord is trying to take your money?

Landlords have been known to rip off tenants and never replace carpet.

Charges sound legitimate unless you can prove they should have had the carpet professionally cleaned and aired out the unit. Maybe do a payment plan. You can challenge the charges in court but the costs of going there may nto be worth it.
