My mom and dad would like to adopt their grandchild in florida. They have temporary custody, the parents did not give away parental rights. What are the procedures and does anyone know about how much it would cost? My dad is disabled and recieves SS and the help from the adoption would greatly help in the care of the grandchild. Thanks

If the parents do not agree, they will have to ask the court to terminate the parental rights of the bio parents. They can file on their own, or get an attorney. I suggest visiting http://www.adoption.com and going to the FL pagve (scroll to FL) and reading up on the process. As a practical matter, do they realyl need to adopt? They have custody and are legal guardians. If the parents are that messed up, it does not sound like any court would ever give the parents anything more than supervised visitation.

The main purpose for adopting is that while they are legal guardians the state and social security do not view that as proof for any additional assistance. by being legal guardians they only get the most basic and minimal of help. My parents are getting up in age and are of the working class. They really arent prepared to raise another child. I have my own children as well I and my wife are in the military and we are gone from home quite often but our children are 11 and 15. The grandchild is only 4. I have helped where i can but i live in KY. thanks for your response.
