If I decide I really can't live in the rental unit after I sign the rental agreement, can I get out of it if it is within the first 30 days? The contract is for 6 months and I remember seing somewhere that if contracts are for certain lengths there is a specified free-look period.

Depends on your lease. You need to read it. YOu also may want to negotiate being let out of the lease via a mutual release if you give hte landlord the deposit and one month's rent. Consult a local attorney with the lease also.
