State statistics show Baby Jane not alone
About 30 infants were abandoned in Alachua County between July 1, 2001 and
June 30, 2002.
By KATHY CIOTOLA
Sun Staff Writer
he infant dubbed "Baby Jane" who was found dead in an Alachua County pond in
August was the only baby in recent years to be found dead and abandoned here,
county authorities say.
But she wasn't the only one abandoned. About 30 children ages 2 or younger were
abandoned in Alachua County between July 1, 2001 and June 30, 2002, said Tom
Barnes, Department of Children & Families spokesman.
Statewide, 1,661 infants or toddlers were abandoned.
In fact, abandoned babies are so common, the national TV show "America's Most
Wanted" decided not to air Baby Jane's case, said Alachua County Sheriff's Sgt.
Keith Faulk. Faulk asked the show's producers to look into it, but they told
him there were too many similar cases nationwide.
Authorities haven't identified a suspect in that case.
But the Baby Jane case is unusual because most abandoned children aren't left
in ponds, Dumpsters or other places that often make the news, Barnes said.
They also don't usually end up dead, he added.
Most parents who abandon their babies or children leave them with a neighbor or
relative, Barnes said. They tell them they'll be back and then they never show
up.
Many times, the parent is on a substance binge when they abandon their child,
Barnes said.
"A parent becomes so overwhelmed by the addiction that they lose track of
what's most important around them," he said.
Some babies have also been abandoned at stores, and one was even left outside
on the lawn of a Palatka nursing home recently, Barnes said.
A safe haven
But parents don't have to take such desperate measures. The Florida Safe Haven
law, passed in 2001, allows a parent to leave an unwanted baby at a hospital or
fire station without notice within three days of giving birth. The parent will
not be charged with abandonment.
In North Florida, two babies have been given up since the Safe Haven law was
enacted.
There is a Safe Haven law of sorts in 45 states, said Tim Jaccard, author of
the original Safe Haven bill passed in New York State in 2000. Jaccard, a
medical officer at the Nassau County Police Department in New York, said he got
tired of finding so many newborns dead.
Women who kill their newborns violently - such as drowning them in toilets,
smothering them in plastic bags or throwing them in trash cans - are often
still teenagers, usually between 16 and 18, said Jaccard, who now heads the
Children of Hope Foundation, a nonprofit organization that strives to save
infants through crisis counseling and education.
The teens often hide the pregnancy and have them at home or in their dorm room.
Almost all - 95 percent - of babies killed on the first day of their life were
not born in a hospital, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The highest rate of neonaticides - killing a baby three days old or less -
happen in February or March. Events nine months earlier, such as senior prom or
school vacation appears to be a factor in these unwanted pregnancies, Jaccard
said.
But Jaccard said mothers between ages 12 and 42 have also called crisis lines.
Many already have a child, are single, and pregnant again by a different man,
he said. They may have a history of depression or suffer from postpartum
psychosis.
Sometimes when a woman calls a crisis line, counselors can work with her to
either give the baby to a family member or give it up for adoption. But 15
birth mothers gave their babies up anonymously in New York since the law was
passed in 2000. Crisis lines in New York have received more than 2,500 calls
since 2000.
"Last year was the first year in 11 years we didn't have neonaticide," Jaccard
said, adding that a few years ago, 14 babies were killed in less than a year in
New York.

Birthright is nothing but a FRONT for a baby stealing ring. I know
people who learned this the hard way, donating their time to try to
stop abortions, only to learn that the people they convinced not to
abort, ended up being victimized by the coercive adoption of their
babies, which they had decided they wanted to have, keep and raise
themselves. The guilt these people had to endure, when they learned
that their good deed was assisting evil people to kidnap more babies
and destroy more lives is horrible. The people in charge of
birthright, don't give a hoot about saving babies, all they want is
the ability to sell them.

Hard to admit I agree with Melinda here about Birthright:
<snip>
I knowpeople who learned this the hard way, donating their time to try tostop abortions, only to learn that the people they convinced not toabort, ended up being victimized by the coercive adoption of theirbabies,>>
<snip>
Here is the typical line of logic. Talk the woman who seeks an abortion into
carrying to term. Never forget that a woman who sought an abortion will be
unfit to parent because, obviously, she did not want the child in the first
place. First priority: Give the child born. Second priority: Get the child
away from the woman who did not want it in the first place and into the waiting
arms of adoptive parents.....married and Christian, natch.

It's not slander or defamation, when it's true and this is very much
true and I know many witnesses to these acts of coercion. People who
use to volunteer their time to help birthright, until they learned
what they were really after.

No wonder there was a lot of confusion in the UK
< quote from http://www.spuc.org.uk/charities/part1.htm >
Birthright
(now renamed "WELLBEING")
Member organisation of AMRC.
Birthright funds the Harris Birthright Centre for Fetal Medicine which has
pioneered the use of Chorionic Villus Sampling and Ultrasound to detect
disability pre-natally in order to facilitate abortion. Princess Diana,
Patron of Birthright, said (Woman, 1/2/86) "Much of the (Harris) Centre's
work is aimed at early detection of abnormalityŠ" Doctors in general offer
no "treatment" but abortion when a disability is detected. An article in
Woman (18/6/91) entitled "Why Babies have such a Testing Time" by Vivienne
Parry of Birthright explained the various screening tests available, saying
"there's no right or wrong about ante-natal testing - only what's right for
youŠ". In Today (4/5/91) Birthright blamed bad housing and environmental
problems on world population trends, and said "make love, not children, and
give the earth a chance". In 1993 pro-abortion ex-MP Rosie Barnes was
appointed as Director, and "Birthright" was subsequently renamed
"Wellbeing", after Mrs Barnes found that people mistakenly thought that
"Birthright" was against abortion.

It IS slander and it IS defamation. I personally know someone who has
volunteered and ran the birthright in her town for over twenty five
years. Not once, Not EVER has she been involved in coercion. They take
donations of clothes and supplies for the woman or young girls. They
offer them help and options. They put just as much emphasis on the
option of parenting as they do adoption. It is entirely the womans
choice. They don't call the resepshunist and ask if they know any PAPS.

It's not the volunteers who are the problem. THey genuinely believe

the innocent volunteers to line their pockets with millions.

>Melinda's grand baby was stolen due to adoption fraud.>>
I don't think so, givenright. Seems to me the baby was voluntarily placed for
adoption by Melinda's daughter at Melinda's strong, ongoing urging. The
necessary relinquishment papers were signed by the daughter on the day of the
child's birth and the infant was placed into custody of waiting adoptive
parents. In Kansas, the scene of the drama, once relinquishment papers are
signed they cannot be revoked. This is true in a number of states. Even though
serious regret set in within days of the placement, Melinda and her daughter
had no legal recourse. It is a terrible situation, but it does not constitute
child theft.
