Here's a question my wife and I have often wonderd. Can your employer tell you what stickers you can have on your personal vehicle. I work for a radio station and obviously my employer forbids us from haveing competeing radio stations on our personal vehicles. To me this just makes good buisiness sence. An advertiser might question whey someone working WGN would be driving around with a bumper sticker for WLUP. Both Chicago stations owned by two different companies. NOw, I don't drive because of my bad eyesight. My wife drops me off at work. She thinks since she drives the car and it is not in the parking lot hardly at all she should be able to put whatever stickers she wants espeically if it is for an out of market station. I tell her that it doesn't matter who drives the car or how long it is in the lot she still cannot put a competeing stations bumper sticker on our car even if the station is 200 miles away. This discusion usually takes place after we go to a concert and we come out and find a sticker on our car. I pull it off and get rid of it because we have been told that if we are seen with a competeing stations sticker on our car we can be terminated no matter who is driveing it. It is in the policy guied. I have no problem with this. Makes perfect buisiness sense to me. My wife doesn't think they should have the right to do that. I have told her that what she thinks should happen and what actually happens are two different things. So here's the question. Can an employer terminate you for haveing a competeing businesses bumper sticker on your personal vehicle, although as I've said before I can't immagine why you would want to, even if that vehicle is hardly ever in the parking lot? I guess a related question would be, Can they tell you what kinds of signs you can put in your yard. Let's say my employer publicly supports presidental candidtate A but I personally support presidentail candidate B. Can they force me to take down my yard sign for candidate B? I'm going under the assumption that they can. I'm just looking for a definateive answer.
