I have been living with my boyfriend for nearly 2 years. We have a 15 month old child. We decided to part ways a week ago. As an unmarried woman with a child what are my rights. Must I file for sole custody? Do I have to give the father visitation? What are the laws in NC?
Please help with any information.

Child custody and visitation is works the same whether you are married or not. Either you or he can file for custody. I would suggest that you do. When you do, file for child support, too. If he is deemed to be a fit person to be around his child (no documented abuse, drug abuse, etc) he will most likely get some form of custody. Normally, if it is not "joint" custody, it will be primary and secondary custody. If he is not given any form of custody (a long shot) he will definitely get visitation.

Taking the time to secure yourself and the child is very good! Before you go about you business, clear your head so that the relationship between you three can have a chance to remain civilized. Leave out the drama for the childs sake and stick to the fact, that is both of your child, and if at all possible, do what's right in regards to it. It's all starts with the first motive!!!
