Our lease ends on April 30th, 2006, we bought a house and are remodeling and we were not sure when we were going to move out. The landlord wanted a 30 day notice. Now we decided to move out on April 30th but I just gave them my notice to vacate on April 4th. They told me that I have to pay the full month of May now. I thought that it is 30 days from when you give them the notice. I would be fine with paying until May 4th but I don't think that it is right we have to pay the entire month of May. Is it just 30 days from when you give the notice or is it an additional calander month from when you give the notice?
Also, we will have to pay an additional $30 on top of the current rent since it is month to month. If I just move out and not pay the additional month, what can they really do. We already have the loans we need so I don't really care if it hurts my credit. I have excellant credit right now anyways. My husband and I are also active duty military, maybe we can get out of it that way? It just doesn't seem fair that they get over 30 days to find someone to live there.

You need to read your lease and lease provisions. Some landlords have rent due the 1st of the month and do not prorate for a partial month, and if that is in the lease, they can do it. I suggest you take the lease to an attorney for review.
