Hey Guys, tomorrow is the day I put down the cigarettes and put on the
patch. I know it is national smoke out day and I always said I wouldn't
do it on the particular day.:) Probably a flimsy excuse on my part. That
and I don't like commercialism even if it is for my own good. Anyway I
picked the 20th as my target date two weeks ago and didn't realize it
was smoke out day. So technically I am in the clear and will go ahead as
planned. Does anyone here care to join me? Any advice?? Thanks in
advance.:) I am hoping I don't get to ***** happy with the keyboard.:)
Please forgive me if I do.:)

Good on you!

I went cold-turkey from 2 packs a day 10 years ago and I am so pleased
I quit. It was hellish for the first few months, and took a full two
years before I stopped enjoying other people's second-hand smoke, but
I'm so glad I stuck with it. I actually felt much sicker for the
first weeks off the smokes (I'd cough so much I would retch, and
coughing would wake me at night. My lungs were used to constant
irritation.) but that passed after a week or two. Just be kind to
yourself, forget about any weight gain, and indulging other vices
until you've got this one licked.

Congrats. It's well worth the trouble.

Advice? I used the patch for 30 days, then had surgery and was drugged for the
next seven days while captive in the hospital. It worked beautifully. I should
open clinics using the system. In more than seven years I don't recall having
more than half a dozen minor cravings.

Enroll your firends and family in the effort. I had the complete support of my
household in the effort. They actively cheered me on, praised my success from
time to time, and made an effort to cope with my round the clock eating and
other idiosyncracies attributable to the task. (The clock didn't get any
rounder, but I did. I'm still a bit above my starting weight, so either watch
what you choose to substitute for the cigarettes or be prepared for a follow up
weight loss program. I'd opt for the latter, since not smoking can command all
of your attention.) Unfortunately, they didn't cut me any slack on my
pre-existing quirks.

Think about what you're going to get in return, rather than what you're leaving
behind. You really do feel better without them. Flavors are more intense and
more complex. There comes a time when you take in a deep breath after a bit of
moderate exercise and it's not accompanied by smokers' wheeze or cough. The
end of one flight of stairs doesn't mean a break before tackling the next.
Both you and your clothing lose that distinctive aroma.

Again, good luck.

Congratulations! The most important thing is motivation, and you have it.
*You* have decided you can do it *yourself*. You can put in several plans of
action! You might get some good ideas from the following:

http://doctordavidcohen.net/after.html

I quit (about 30 a day) when we adopted our second son 25 years ago. He is
now the only one in the family who smokes. :-) I reckon I would be dead by
now if I still smoked. Definitely. It is a terrible drug, and the effects
are so severe. You might feel rough for the first few days as your lungs
rediscover unused space. You will cough up an awful lot of junk, in
embarrassing quantities, and at inopportune moments. Carry plenty of tissues
with you. Don't worry. If you have to explain to anyone, just say "I have
quit smoking".

Keep a glass of boiled water handy, and sip from it - often. If temptation
rears its ugly head, or the going gets tough, put some drops of Rescue
Remedy or Emergency Essence in it. (Definitely works - even on our dog when
she was having a panic attack during a severe thunderstorm, when I thought
her heart would conk, from fright.)

Apples are great, for the crunch factor. They are a sort of noisy
substitute, and they are healthy. Carrots are good too, but too many can
give you a headache. Avoid diet-anything. Avoid fizzy drinks of any
description. Get into all the healthy options that you can think of. Take
good vitamins and minerals. B5 (pantothenic acid) is a great *stress*
vitamin, and you can't OD on it. Milk thistle is a very good detoxifier. You
will soon feel so energised that you will hardly recognise yourself!

The best of good luck to you. If you slip at any stage (and you probably
won't!) start again, immediately.

Focus on how stupid the habit is, how dirty and smelly it is, and if you
can, get a hold of Bob Newhart's recording about Walter Raleigh, for a
laugh!

You brave.
I wax and wane (meaning I still occasionally bum one from a friend).

Go for it! Remember, if you fall off the wagon, don't get upset, just
figure out why you fell and then climb back on.

Also, ask your doctor about Zyban if you need more help.

Good luck!

Good luck, WF. I am on day 27 with the patch. It hasn't been too bad, there
are a couple of "regular" cigarettes I miss, but I am getting over it.

I went cold turkey in 1985 when my mom (adoptive) died of lung cancer. Even if
you slip once in awhile, don't give up. Buy some Brachs hard candy for those
moments and be assured that it gets easier over time. Kathy J

Thank You all you guys for your advice. It is the end of day one and I
didn't kill any one. (although I would be excused for another reason:)
Amazingly the patch works great. Well at least until my second break and
then I had some strong urges. I think that was more a mind thing. As I
usually smoke about five on that break.:) Jeanette congratulations and
feel free to e-mail me with any advice! I am actually doing better than
I thought. I really want to do it and I think I am ready. I think that
plays a major part.

It didn't actually hit me until about the 3rd day- I had to find all new
friends at work! LOL. I had to find someone else to take breaks with! The
only one I still miss is the first one at work. But that will pass, I hope. I
am still eating red vines or black licorice in the car, but home is not bad.
Stay away from people that smoke until it starts stinking to you, and don't go
anywhere without a tissue after the first week or so! lol

Thats something I did not want to give up either so lots of times, well really
only on nice weather days (the option is the advantage of not being a smoker) I
take them anyway and refer to them as my "second hand smoke breaks" Kathy J
