I had a major stroke 2 years ago. I was 28 and it was sudden. I worked in HR and my manager put me on FMLA. I went through intense rehabilitation and back to work 12 weeks later, but I just can't do what I used to be able to do. I used to type 80+ wpm, now barely 30. I used to interview people, but now I still can, but my handwriting is awful an people can't read them. I still have speech difficulties. The owner doesn't understand that part of my brain died and I can't do everything anymore.

What my question is: can I go on social security and just work parttime somewhere where there is less stress? I hate to go on Social Security, but I can't deal with the stress (I beleive that is what contributed to my stroke).

That's a question you'll have to ask the social security administration. It's too situation specific a question for us to answer here.

It's possible that you are eligible for Social Security, depending on the severity of your condition. You would need to work with your doctors to gather the necessary documentation and complete the appropriate paperwork. The Social Security website is a good starting point www.ssa.gov.

To psychomaniac313, one form of Social Security disability (SSDI) is based on having had a history of employment. The other (SSI) is based on financial need. You would need to contact the Social Security Administration to see if you are eligible.
