Does an employer have the right to question an employee who has a medical condition about medication prescribed by their physician? I have a chronic pain situation that is aggravated by the job that I do and I have been under a physicans care for several months now due to the condition. There are no safety issues involved in my job, I do not operate a motor vehicle or heavy equipment, just standard office equipment. Does my employer have the right to question me about the medication that I take for my chronic pain? Can they tell me that I can't take my medication while at work? I work in the state of Pennsylvania. What are my rights?

Does an employer have the right to question an employee who has a medical condition about medication prescribed by their physician? Yes. Some medications can easily make it unsafe for an employee to be at work (although that may not be the case with you) and/or impair the quality of an employee's work - difficulty focusing, sleepiness, and so on.

What I suggest you do is speak to your employer about their specific concerns regarding your medication and offer to bring in something from your doctor addressing those issues.
