but would like some opinions if possible.
I am now 6 months pregnant. My employer after a doctors note early in my pregnancy made accomadations due to hazardous chemicals I was exposed to. I was moved to a desk outside of my department since there were no desks outside the lab in my department that were open. To complete my new responsibilities of reviewer I had to walk down the hallway to my department to check and see if new books had been placed in my bins. I would also have to walk down the hall to return the books to the other chemists.
Around 14 weeks into my pregnancy my supervisor called me into his office and told me that the director had told him that he thought I wasn't doing my job. He based this opinion on the number of times I walked up and down the hallway. Our director's office is a wall of windows that face the department hallway. I explained to my supervisor that my trips up and down the hallway were for four purposes: 1. To see if new books were ready for review. 2. To return checked books. 3. To ask questions of chemists if I had some about their books. 4. To go to the bathroom when needed.
My supervisor told me that three of the four reasons were appropriate for going up and down the hall. And that if I needed to go to the bathroom I would have to use an alternate route. So since that day I now walk an extra 40 feet to bypass the hallway to make my way to our nearest restroom. No one else in our department is restricted on how much they are in the hallway, or how often they go to the restroom.
I was told on this past Friday by my supervisor that per the director from now on if I need assistance from my supervisor or Lead that I can not go into the hallway and wait for them to be available. Nor am I allowed to have any conversations of a personal nature outside of our designated break times. I would have no issue if these new rules were applied to all 40 people in my department, but these rules are only being applied to me. And how do I know this? Friday afternoon we had a departmental staff meeting and the only mention of personal conversations is that they want everyone to "limit personal conversations to 2-4 minutes in length".
Since being pregnant I have also had my work hours questioned by my director, because I had a verbal agreement with my supervisor that I would change my hours from 7am-3pm to coming in between 8am and 8:30am and leaving between 4pm and 4:30pm. To help make myself available for the second shift personnel when they had questions for me about their books. The director said that the supervisor had told him that I had only arranged for a 2 week change. I told him that I had no problem changing back to 7am and staying late to be avaiable for second shift. He told me about a form that is not mentioned anywhere in our handbook that I was supposed to fill out to change my hours. No one else has had their hours questioned.
So is any of this discrimination or is it just poor management?
