I've lived with my roommate since mid-December (2005). I've paid the phone bill by myself, yet she's using it. She doesn't work - legally. She lost her id in December. My landlord seems to have forgotten to get her promised social security card - maybe a number. She doesn't have a social security card, so she claims. There is no actual income.
My neighbor recently suggested that she was on speed. I assumed her manic depression was mild, but worsening without actually being diagnosed. Her being abused throughout her life was never mentioned in the months before we moved in together. Her mother's alcoholism was obvious. When she slowly moved out of her mother's den, she introduced me to a 'friend' of hers. That 'friend' of hers stole my friend's bike. Afterward, my roommate admitted in distress that her friend had stolen her bicycle once before. Now, she stores a bike in our apartment and TWO others outside. My friend's bike is nowhere to be seen.
Her behavior is terrible. She is probably on drugs. I'd describe her as a speedfreak, as a neighbor suggested. I had asked his assessment of her. He had offered her a job, but she has yet to attend.
I need to know how I can refuse her strange late-night houseguests. How am I responsible for my place, when my roommate refuses to address my concerns? Can I refuse the entry of her guests? I would let her throw out my friends, because I know my own guests are not suspicious or guilty of wrongdoing. Two men in her life have threatened me. One said he owns a gun. Another said he's got reason to hurt me. I've never hit or harmed her. What protection do I have?
How can I set ground rules? How can I get her off the lease?
