I work for a good size company and have been told to work over time. I have no issue with having to work overtime but my issue is, can I be specifically told 30 minutes prior to my regular shift ends that I have to work intil a certain time. I have tried to be helpful and stated that I could work an hour shorter then what I am being told I have to work and then also was told only 30 minutes before my day was over. Since I also would need to make arrangements short notice isn't something I am able to have and I was told I could be fired. What, if any; is the time frame a employer must give to emloyee's in Washington state for manditory over time. If I said no could I actually get fired or just written up? thank you for your help.

There is no requirement in any state that any certain amount of notice be given for overtime. Would it be fair to give very short notice, then discipline or fire an employee for not being able to work it? No, probably not. But is it legal to do so? Yes, it is.
