Is there a law that states how many hours a day a company can work a person? I work for a company that once you get to work you are there until they say when you can go home. My hours are 6 am to 2:30 pm, but if they want you to stay until 4;30, 5:30 or 10:00 the next day you have to stay. You never know when you are going home some days until minutes before you leave. Is this legal in Oklahoma?

It is legal in all 50 states, with a very few, industry specific exceptions. Unless you have a bona fide contract that specifically says otherwise or are in one of the very few industries where there is a public safety factor involved (airline pilot, truck driver, in a very few states nursing), your employer decides what hours you work and has no legal obligation to release you when your shift is over.

That is what I figured, but to me it would seem a safety factor at some point because people get tired as the hours go by. I haven't been here long enough at this point to have experienced more than 13 hours in a day, but some of the people I work with say they have had to work for 24 hours before they got to go home. I don't look forward to that day. We wear steel toed shoes and walk on concert floors and some days I just need to get off of my feet. 24 hours I can't even imagine...Thanks for your quick response.

Just for curiosity's sake, what type of work do you do?

Nothing that would be considered a safety hazard. I work in quality as a lead person in manufacturing. I ask this original question because some of the people that work for me wanted to know if they had to work the overtime and I wanted the honest reply to the question so I came here.
Thanks for the reply...
