Im trying to find out what to do about my old landlord. I signed a lease in april 2005 and my working van broke down in dec of that year. I told my landlord and he was going to work with me about rent. Well i got up and going again working at the end of the month. Well its slow season so i wasn't getting much money. I called him in the middle of jan and told him i just had a kid i have my son and works slow so i want to move out before i get to far behind. he agreed and thanked me for doing the right thing and understood that i was having a bad time. I said i would move at the end of the month he said he would get the place in the paper to get rented. I moved and i told him i would get caught up on rent that i owed when i got the ball rollin again he said good keep in touch. Well i got a letter from the courts saying i owe him thousands of dollers for moving. I don't understand way he didn't tell me if u move u will have to pay to the end because if i knew that i would of lived there and played catch up. I don't know what my rights are. If it was a few hundred i wouldn't care but im talking thousands.

you probably owe back rent then rent til your lease ended or til he rented the place whichever came first. read your lease, some leases say you are responsible for advertising fees, then damages to the place, if any. and cleaning, painting, etc. after you moved. deducted from your security and whats left over. so you have to do the math on that. for instance how much back rent did you owe. you moved in end of jan so thats 3 months of rent, did you leave the place clean? were there any damages?

Well based on what you said, that sounds about right- catching up and the month you missed that you moved in. I suspect he got the judgment so you won't forget to pay him.
