I live in arizona. Work for a Community College. I am a non-exempt hourly paid employee. I work 40 hours per week (8hr day, 5 days per week). I worked on a holiday (presidents day) which is a paid holiday for all employees. I worked 7 hours on the holiday and 32 hours for the rest of the week. My pay stub is listed as:
Reg pay = 32hrs
Holiday pay = 8hrs
Straight OT = 7hrs

All time was paid at my regular straight hourly rate.

I guess my question is; should I get paid double time for the hours worked (7) on the holiday that everyone else was off? Or is the straight hourly rate correct for the hours worked on a holiday?

I am a public sector as I work for a community college and am considered a public employee. I was just interested in finding out if they are required to pay a higher rate if I work on the holiday even if it does not cause my time to go over 40 hours worked. Again I worked 7 hours on the holiday, and 32 hours the rest of the week. I was paid straight time for all hours listed below.
I worked 32 regular hours
I worked 7 hours on the holiday
I was paid 8 hours for the holiday
Again, I was paid straight time for all above hours.
Total hours worked =39
Total hours paid 47

Actually, unless I am missing something (and please let me know if I am) you were paid double time for the hours you worked on Presidents day, they just did it as 8 hours of vacation time and 7 hours of regular time, so you rec'd double time for the 7 hours you worked that day, they just seperated it. It would be highly uncommon that they would pay you the 8 hours of vacation time plus double time for the hours worked, that would be like triple time or something :)

Here's what I found that mabye explains it better than I do, I know my response wasn't worded clearly. :D

[I][B]For each hour of holiday work, employees receive holiday premium pay. Holiday premium pay is equal to an employee's rate of basic pay. Employees who are required to work on a holiday receive their rate of basic pay, plus holiday premium pay, for each hour of holiday work. (AND THIS IS BECAUSE YOU ARE A PUBLIC SECTOR EMPLOYEE, THIS WOULDN'T APPLY TO PRIVATE SECTOR EMPLOYEES)

I cannot find anything to suggest that you were entitled to be paid double time.

However, my findings suggest that you may be entitled to an additional day off with pay for working on the holiday.

Hrmanager2,

Could you please post a link to where you found that info? It is what I was looking for. I knew what you said in the inital post was true, I did get paid double because of the holiday pay plus the straight pay added up to double. What I was looking for was the Holiday Premium pay. Post the link if you can.

Thanks......... :)
