This is our friend's information. She did not find out she was adopted
until she was 42 years old after her adoptive parents had both died.
Born: Angela Marie Curtis
Date: 7/9/1956 Old Alexandria Hospital
Dr. Murphy
Birthmother: Margaret Ruth Robertson Curtis, age 32 in 1956
Husband: John Martin Curtis, age 32 in 1956
Siblings: Donna, age 9 (in 1956) and John, age 7 (in 1956)
Paperwork says Mrs. Curtis came to Alexandria to have the baby and give it
up for adoption because she could not afford to raise another child. She
was separated from her husband on and off, most of the time; he was
alcoholic. She did not identify the father of the baby. She came to the
area in the early summer and left before signing all the forms for
relinquishment before the baby was 10 days old. She stated she worked/lived
in Cincinnati, OH and did clerical work in a store there and was supporting
her 2 children and herself. She paid cash for the hospital and doctor
bills.
When they tried to contact her at Woodbridge (she was staying with family,
perhaps as a boarder?) this family did not know anything about her or where
she went when she left.
We have checked out SSDI, all possible listings online for names and
addresses, www.anybirthday.com, obituaries for John Curtis (and variations)
and Margaret Curtis (variations), www.google.com, Copernic and other search
engines, www.people-finders.ws, www.knowx.com, www.ussearch.com (free
searches plus my friend paid for a search before she knew better),checked
for the 1941/1944-1970/2000 City Directory listings for John or Margaret
Curtis and all Curtis and Robertson listings in 1941/1951/1955/1958,
marriage records for 1938 - 1952 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Butler Co.,
Cuyahoga County, Cincinnati court (criminal and municipal) records, Wood
County, Lucas County also checked. Someone checked DIVORCE records for
1949 - 1970 but there is no divorce record for John and Margaret Curtis;
also believe MARRIAGE records for 1949 - 1970 were checked in case Margaret
Curtis remarried.
City Directories checked for Curtis listings, only came up with the
following "possibilities":
1958 Suburban Cincinnati Directory: Mrs. Margaret Curtis office secretary
Peerless Fdy resident of Cincinnati - Peerless Foundry located in Elmwood
Place until 1961, then "disappeared".
1958 Cincinnati City Directory
Margaret Curtis 1932 Auburn Ave. (empty lot now, nearest elementary school
is Taft) Taft Elementary School secretary via email first said "We do not
have any record of the Curtis' in our files. They may be stored some place
else but I have not seen them." Then 10 minutes later, emailed "Without
authorization from Donna or John Curtis, I can not release any information
on them. That is the district policy and I cannot go against that. If you
have a signed authorization letter from them then you can fax it to me. On
this form we need their signature and phone number for verification
purposes." Tried to get her to just verify the info I do believe and got no
response. Anyone - does this mean the kids attended or not?
1953-54 Cincinnati City Directory:
John Curtis 704 Elm
No Margaret Curtis listed, had someone check 704 Elm in 1951 (the only book
she has) and it lists 704 Elm as Anna Edwards furnished rooms. Also noted
that this is located downtown, next to a fur store and across the street
from John Shillito Co. Sporting Goods. According to another source,
Shillito's was a large department store and became a Lazerus's Dept. Store.
Birthmother said she "worked in a clerical position for a store in
Cincinnati".
1962 John residence 2033 Vine
Checked Voter Registration records for Margaret Robertson, Margaret Curtis
and John Curtis from 1933 - 1997 - no listings.
Checking all possible genealogy sources for OH and VA - many, many emails to
others searching same surnames.
DMV search was done (current years) for OH and some other states, plus other
volunteers ran names through other databases.
Trip made to Alexandria Courthouse and Prince William Courthouse - no
marriages, no adoption information accessible. Hospital does not have
records and does not send to archives - destroys after 10 years. Only 2
names come up for Dr. Murphy - one is Frank J. Murphy and the other is
Christopher J. Murphy in Alexandria at that time - cannot find further
information.
Now checking through 1930 Census for all Margaret Robertson listings age 5,
6, 7 and John Curtis listings age 5, 6, and 7 then will check other ages.
Am going through and trying to get obituaries on any relatives to see if
Margaret or John current info is listed, obits are from all over the USA.
Talked to VA Social Worker who conducted her own search, she gave us a
mailing address of the home that birthmother rented a room. Trying to
"translate" this into a street address:
Rural Route 1, Box 75, Woodbridge, VA (as of July, 1956). Postmaster in
Woodbridge has given us the runaround and cites "privacy" but we are
pursuing other possibilities. We know this is the 1st route out of the
Woodbridge post office and the 75th delivery stop. NEW- saw 2 other babies
born the same month with RR1, Box # for addresses, followed them and now
have a possible street name, one neighbor still lives there but does not
recall the Box #'s of anyone, he also spoke with a couple of neighbors and
they don't recall either. Contact made with Property Tax Assessor (they
only keep records for 5 years) and Land Records dept at Courthouse. Land
Records only shows who bought the property and its legal description, not
mailing addresses. Mail carriers and Postmaster from 1956 have all died.
Now writing letters to whatever old neighbors I can find asking for help in
the location of the house or if they remembered anything - no responses so
far.
Donna Curtis (approximate correct age) married to Wilford Willis in KY,
thanks to an Angel have an address and phone number - finally got through,
she is not the one, Curtis is her first marriage not her maiden name.
Social Worker also stated that on the OBC, birth mother and her husband are
listed as being born in OH (no dates) and husband is listed as usual
occupation "laborer" and unemployed.
Social Worker tried to contact Social Security to locate birth mother
(without a birth date, etc.) and was told that Social Security did not
"have" an address for this name. She sent us a list of all schools open in
Cincinnati in 1940's and said when she called the district office, was told
that she would have to call each individual school to see if they had birth
mother as a student, she did not have time to do that. Yearbooks that
Cincinnati Library has copies of were checked once for 1938 -1948, only 3
"possibles":
Curtis (male sophomore) Hughes High 1942, no first name or initials -
contacted Alumni Assn, woman sent me photos. She asked for John Curtis
records and we received some for a John Curtis born in 1952, too late for
the Curtis male student in 1942.
Robertson, P. (female) 1945 freshman, 1947 junior Western Hills High -
photos arrived. Waiting since Sept. 2002 on Alumni Association to send me
more information, no response whatsoever.
Roberts, Ruth (female, Senior) 1943 Withrow High - photo arrived. Alumni
association sent Ruth Roberts my contact info, does not release information
on alumni, but did tell me her married name and that she lives in FL .
Heard back from Ruth Roberts, not the right one, she has tons of information
on her family tree going back to 1600's.
Also, a wonderful Angel went to Columbus and checked birth records for
1922-1925:
No Margaret Ruth Robertson or Ruth Margaret Robertson or anyone similar born
in OH during those years.
(1) John Curtis and a couple of Baby Curtis born during 1922 -1925,
following up now, believe most are the ones on SSDI and I have obits - most
don't match up.
(1) Donna Curtis born with father named Clarence in Akron. 1946 Clarence
was in Army then a carpenter according to city directories. At Donna's
birth there were 2 children in the family.
(1) John Curtis born with father named John in Middletown (Butler Co). 1948
(Also got a marriage record for John B. Curtis married to Mary L. Blair in
Butler Co. 1945, City Directory shows John B. Curtis (Mary) student for
1948. Prior to that and after that, no listing. Tracked this family to
Atlanta, GA - they are not the ones.
Angel gave me an address and phone number for a John Curtis in NC who would
be the right age, sent letter, it was returned as "Undeliverable". Have not
been able to call the phone number I now have - city is Etowah or
Hendersonville, NC. Have traced him a little - a wife is in SSDI, named
Virginia T. (McGrath) Curtis, both SSN issued in NY. Have obit copy after
calling library - John and Virginia married in 1951, born in NY, lived in FL
then NC - 3 children, Michael, Jean and Christine. Unless John married and
divorced Margaret before 1950 or she was his mistress, he is not the right
one.
Wrote a LETTER TO THE EDITOR explaining the search and giving some info but
only enough if the right person saw it - sent it via email to both
Cincinnati papers and 2 VA newspapers. Got NO response from any of them and
cannot see that they ever got printed.
Nothing is coming up, we have no further information than we had when we
started. Neither myself nor my friend live near OH so we cannot go there
physically to search. Any suggestions or ideas would be very appreciated.

Letter to the Editor:
Dear Sir,
November is National Adoption Awareness Month
I would like to take this time to let everyone know that November is
National Adoption Awareness Month.
There are currently over 1 million adoptees and birth parents in the US who
are searching for each other.
As an owner of an internet group on Yahoo 'HEAVENS_HELPERS' I felt compelled
to give you, the public a few facts about your rights as adult adoptees or
birth parents to initiate a search for your lost one.
There are literally thousands of internet search and support groups. We
provide searches for free and offer support to those lost to adoption.
I became involved in this process looking for my nephew who was adopted at
birth with out the consent of the birth father.
I recently (in August) had the priveledge of witnessing first hand the
miraculous reunion of my friend Betty Klinger and her daughter(Colleen) Lisa
Peterman who was lost in adoption for over 43 years.
Long ago teen- age pregnancy was such a strain on families that most young
girls were frightened or duped into giving up their babies under duress. Out
of the mothers I have contact with, almost everyone of them confirm that
fact.
For most of the adoptee's I deal with, their most important issue is their
lack of medical history and national heritage. This is something we take for
granted everyday. For adoptee's it is agonizing. To go to the Dr. sick with
an illness you know nothing about and to be asked 'what is your medical
history', is painful. They have to state 'I don't know, I am adopted'. Then
they are put throught many, sometimes unnecessary tests.
I believe that adult adoptees should be given their original birth
certificates at an appropriate age(18-21). If they can drive, legally marry,
and fight and die for their country, they should be able to know their own
TRUTH.
National Heritage is another big issue for adoptees.
Many can tell they are American Indian, Itlaian, etc., but to what degree.
Who do they resemble?? Their mother, father, a grandparent?
What about inherited disorders?? Mental, addictive?? Doesn't someone who has
an alcoholic parent deserve to know that fact so they can take the proper
precautions to stay away from that indulgence? What about diabetes?? If you
are pre-disposed to that disease, wouldn't it be nice to know that??
There are so many questions and so few answers for these, the forgotten
citizens of our country. There are many adoptive parents on our groups,
also, who love and care about their adopted children enough to try and help
them search for their medical TRUTH.
Many adoptee's feel as if they are 3rd rate citizens with limited rights,
and I hope the next time you visit your Dr. and are asked for your medical
history, you will think about the adopted person, who hasn't a clue what
their's is.
I would like to petition out legislators to make it a law, to give adult
adoptee's their original birth certificates at a legal age.

in the dumps. I know he deep down he wonder alot about

I was born in Kansas City, MO and that state seems to close doors in your face every which way you turn. Its disgusting that we don't seem to have any rights! I hope you had an okay birthday. Please read to the end, there are updates, sorry it is so long!
This is our friend's information. She did not find out she was adopted
until she was 42 years old after her adoptive parents had both died.
Born: Angela Marie Curtis
Date: 7/9/1956 Old Alexandria Hospital
Dr. Murphy
Birthmother: Margaret Ruth Robertson Curtis, age 32 in 1956
Husband: John Martin Curtis, age 32 in 1956
Siblings: Donna, age 9 (in 1956) and John, age 7 (in 1956)
Paperwork says Mrs. Curtis came to Alexandria to have the baby and give it
up for adoption because she could not afford to raise another child. She
was separated from her husband on and off, most of the time; he was
alcoholic. She did not identify the father of the baby. She came to the
area in the early summer and left before signing all the forms for
relinquishment before the baby was 10 days old. She stated she worked/lived
in Cincinnati, OH and did clerical work in a store there and was supporting
her 2 children and herself. She paid cash for the hospital and doctor
bills.
When they tried to contact her at Woodbridge (she was staying with family,
perhaps as a boarder?) this family did not know anything about her or where
she went when she left.
We have checked out SSDI, all possible listings online for names and
addresses, www.anybirthday.com, obituaries for John Curtis (and variations)
and Margaret Curtis (variations), www.google.com, Copernic and other search
engines, www.people-finders.ws, www.knowx.com, www.ussearch.com (free
searches plus my friend paid for a search before she knew better),checked
for the 1941/1944-1970/2000 City Directory listings for John or Margaret
Curtis and all Curtis and Robertson listings in 1941/1951/1955/1958,
marriage records for 1938 - 1952 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Butler Co.,
Cuyahoga County, Cincinnati court (criminal and municipal) records, Wood
County, Lucas County also checked. Someone checked DIVORCE records for
1949 - 1970 but there is no divorce record for John and Margaret Curtis;
also believe MARRIAGE records for 1949 - 1970 were checked in case Margaret
Curtis remarried.
City Directories checked for Curtis listings, only came up with the
following "possibilities":
1958 Suburban Cincinnati Directory: Mrs. Margaret Curtis office secretary
Peerless Fdy resident of Cincinnati - Peerless Foundry located in Elmwood
Place until 1961, then "disappeared".
1958 Cincinnati City Directory
Margaret Curtis 1932 Auburn Ave. (empty lot now, nearest elementary school
is Taft) Taft Elementary School secretary via email first said "We do not
have any record of the Curtis' in our files. They may be stored some place
else but I have not seen them." Then 10 minutes later, emailed "Without
authorization from Donna or John Curtis, I can not release any information
on them. That is the district policy and I cannot go against that. If you
have a signed authorization letter from them then you can fax it to me. On
this form we need their signature and phone number for verification
purposes." Tried to get her to just verify the info I do believe and got no
response. Anyone - does this mean the kids attended or not?
1953-54 Cincinnati City Directory:
John Curtis 704 Elm
No Margaret Curtis listed, had someone check 704 Elm in 1951 (the only book
she has) and it lists 704 Elm as Anna Edwards furnished rooms. Also noted
that this is located downtown, next to a fur store and across the street
from John Shillito Co. Sporting Goods. According to another source,
Shillito's was a large department store and became a Lazerus's Dept. Store.
Birthmother said she "worked in a clerical position for a store in
Cincinnati".
1962 John residence 2033 Vine
Checked Voter Registration records for Margaret Robertson, Margaret Curtis
and John Curtis from 1933 - 1997 - no listings.
Checking all possible genealogy sources for OH and VA - many, many emails to
others searching same surnames.
DMV search was done (current years) for OH and some other states, plus other
volunteers ran names through other databases.
Trip made to Alexandria Courthouse and Prince William Courthouse - no
marriages, no adoption information accessible. Hospital does not have
records and does not send to archives - destroys after 10 years. Only 2
names come up for Dr. Murphy - one is Frank J. Murphy and the other is
Christopher J. Murphy in Alexandria at that time - cannot find further
information.
Now checking through 1930 Census for all Margaret Robertson listings age 5,
6, 7 and John Curtis listings age 5, 6, and 7 then will check other ages.
Am going through and trying to get obituaries on any relatives to see if
Margaret or John current info is listed, obits are from all over the USA.
Talked to VA Social Worker who conducted her own search, she gave us a
mailing address of the home that birthmother rented a room. Trying to
"translate" this into a street address:
Rural Route 1, Box 75, Woodbridge, VA (as of July, 1956). Postmaster in
Woodbridge has given us the runaround and cites "privacy" but we are
pursuing other possibilities. We know this is the 1st route out of the
Woodbridge post office and the 75th delivery stop. NEW- saw 2 other babies
born the same month with RR1, Box # for addresses, followed them and now
have a possible street name, one neighbor still lives there but does not
recall the Box #'s of anyone, he also spoke with a couple of neighbors and
they don't recall either. Contact made with Property Tax Assessor (they
only keep records for 5 years) and Land Records dept at Courthouse. Land
Records only shows who bought the property and its legal description, not
mailing addresses. Mail carriers and Postmaster from 1956 have all died.
Now writing letters to whatever old neighbors I can find asking for help in
the location of the house or if they remembered anything - no responses so
far.
Donna Curtis (approximate correct age) married to Wilford Willis in KY,
thanks to an Angel have an address and phone number - finally got through,
she is not the one, Curtis is her first marriage not her maiden name.
Social Worker also stated that on the OBC, birth mother and her husband are
listed as being born in OH (no dates) and husband is listed as usual
occupation "laborer" and unemployed.
Social Worker tried to contact Social Security to locate birth mother
(without a birth date, etc.) and was told that Social Security did not
"have" an address for this name. She sent us a list of all schools open in
Cincinnati in 1940's and said when she called the district office, was told
that she would have to call each individual school to see if they had birth
mother as a student, she did not have time to do that. Yearbooks that
Cincinnati Library has copies of were checked once for 1938 -1948, only 3
"possibles":
Curtis (male sophomore) Hughes High 1942, no first name or initials -
contacted Alumni Assn, woman sent me photos. She asked for John Curtis
records and we received some for a John Curtis born in 1952, too late for
the Curtis male student in 1942.
Robertson, P. (female) 1945 freshman, 1947 junior Western Hills High -
photos arrived. Waiting since Sept. 2002 on Alumni Association to send me
more information, no response whatsoever.
Roberts, Ruth (female, Senior) 1943 Withrow High - photo arrived. Alumni
association sent Ruth Roberts my contact info, does not release information
on alumni, but did tell me her married name and that she lives in FL .
Heard back from Ruth Roberts, not the right one, she has tons of information
on her family tree going back to 1600's.
Also, a wonderful Angel went to Columbus and checked birth records for
1922-1925:
No Margaret Ruth Robertson or Ruth Margaret Robertson or anyone similar born
in OH during those years.
(1) John Curtis and a couple of Baby Curtis born during 1922 -1925,
following up now, believe most are the ones on SSDI and I have obits - most
don't match up.
(1) Donna Curtis born with father named Clarence in Akron. 1946 Clarence
was in Army then a carpenter according to city directories. At Donna's
birth there were 2 children in the family.
(1) John Curtis born with father named John in Middletown (Butler Co). 1948
(Also got a marriage record for John B. Curtis married to Mary L. Blair in
Butler Co. 1945, City Directory shows John B. Curtis (Mary) student for
1948. Prior to that and after that, no listing. Tracked this family to
Atlanta, GA - they are not the ones.
Angel gave me an address and phone number for a John Curtis in NC who would
be the right age, sent letter, it was returned as "Undeliverable". Have not
been able to call the phone number I now have - city is Etowah or
Hendersonville, NC. Have traced him a little - a wife is in SSDI, named
Virginia T. (McGrath) Curtis, both SSN issued in NY. Have obit copy after
calling library - John and Virginia married in 1951, born in NY, lived in FL
then NC - 3 children, Michael, Jean and Christine. Unless John married and
divorced Margaret before 1950 or she was his mistress, he is not the right
one.
Wrote a LETTER TO THE EDITOR explaining the search and giving some info but
only enough if the right person saw it - sent it via email to both
Cincinnati papers and 2 VA newspapers. Got NO response from any of them and
cannot see that they ever got printed.
Nothing is coming up, we have no further information than we had when we
started. Neither myself nor my friend live near OH so we cannot go there
physically to search. Any suggestions or ideas would be very appreciated.

Letter to the Editor:
Dear Sir,
November is National Adoption Awareness Month
I would like to take this time to let everyone know that November is
National Adoption Awareness Month.
There are currently over 1 million adoptees and birth parents in the US who
are searching for each other.
As an owner of an internet group on Yahoo 'HEAVENS_HELPERS' I felt compelled
to give you, the public a few facts about your rights as adult adoptees or
birth parents to initiate a search for your lost one.
There are literally thousands of internet search and support groups. We
provide searches for free and offer support to those lost to adoption.
I became involved in this process looking for my nephew who was adopted at
birth with out the consent of the birth father.
I recently (in August) had the priveledge of witnessing first hand the
miraculous reunion of my friend Betty Klinger and her daughter(Colleen) Lisa
Peterman who was lost in adoption for over 43 years.
Long ago teen- age pregnancy was such a strain on families that most young
girls were frightened or duped into giving up their babies under duress. Out
of the mothers I have contact with, almost everyone of them confirm that
fact.
For most of the adoptee's I deal with, their most important issue is their
lack of medical history and national heritage. This is something we take for
granted everyday. For adoptee's it is agonizing. To go to the Dr. sick with
an illness you know nothing about and to be asked 'what is your medical
history', is painful. They have to state 'I don't know, I am adopted'. Then
they are put throught many, sometimes unnecessary tests.
I believe that adult adoptees should be given their original birth
certificates at an appropriate age(18-21). If they can drive, legally marry,
and fight and die for their country, they should be able to know their own
TRUTH.
National Heritage is another big issue for adoptees.
Many can tell they are American Indian, Itlaian, etc., but to what degree.
Who do they resemble?? Their mother, father, a grandparent?
What about inherited disorders?? Mental, addictive?? Doesn't someone who has
an alcoholic parent deserve to know that fact so they can take the proper
precautions to stay away from that indulgence? What about diabetes?? If you
are pre-disposed to that disease, wouldn't it be nice to know that??
There are so many questions and so few answers for these, the forgotten
citizens of our country. There are many adoptive parents on our groups,
also, who love and care about their adopted children enough to try and help
them search for their medical TRUTH.
Many adoptee's feel as if they are 3rd rate citizens with limited rights,
and I hope the next time you visit your Dr. and are asked for your medical
history, you will think about the adopted person, who hasn't a clue what
their's is.
I would like to petition out legislators to make it a law, to give adult
adoptee's their original birth certificates at a legal age.

Hello Group... Well let me say i live with a adoptee
and every year around his Birthday he gets very down
in the dumps. I know he deep down he wonder alot about
his birth family and wants me to find them but also
wants to wait to get info from me when he is ready for
it.... if and when the time comes i get the info. He
is afraid of what he might find and afraid of
rejection. In alot of way i can understand where he is
coming from cause i am also a Adoptee but reunited in
1984 and it was the best day of my life....alot of
questions in my mind fianlly answered. Good luck to
all that are searching. I am still in the process of
locating his birthfamily. Donna

Chosenbaby Dear Chosenbaby - I just had my birthday a few days ago. And yes, I've always dreaded my birthday. To me, its just a reminder of the day I was given away. I've always wondered if my mom thinks about me. I think about her all the time, more so lately for some reason. I was born in Kansas City, MO and that state seems to close doors in your face every which way you turn. Its disgusting that we don't seem to have any rights! I hope you had an okay birthday. Mine wasn't any more depressing than usual, so I guess that's a good one. Take care.
