Advocates for open adoption form organization
Advocates for open adoption have formed a new organization called Oklahomans
for Open Records and Adoption Honesty Inc. to educate the public about the
rights of adoptees, whose birth records have been sealed.
"November is Adoption Awareness Month, and we would like to change the law so
any adoptee at the age of majority would be able to access to their own
original, unaltered birth certificate," said Pat Marler, co-chair of the new
organization. "Everyone else can request their original birth certificate from
Vital Statistics and get it. Adoptees receive an amended birth certificate,
which may or may not name the correct place of birth."
The group has been meeting once a month since May. The next meeting will be at
1 p.m. Nov. 15 at the downtown Tulsa library. The meeting is open to the
public.
For additional information, write to OORAH Inc., P.O. Box 615, Edmond, OK
73083-0615 or log on to their Web site at www.geocities.com_open/OORAH.html.
