Regarding Donna Harbaugh's Oct. 15 letter about adopting American children:
Does she know how American children feel when they are not adopted? Does she
know how American parents feel when they adopt an American child, only to have
that adoption overturned in court because the birth parents changed their
minds?
Yes, I know the children here in America are bounced back and forth in foster
homes. Though that is unfortunate, they at least have loving, clean homes to
live in and a family of which to be a part. (Of course there are horror stories
there, too.)
These children in Moldova live in an orphanage of nearly 600 kids. There are
maybe 30 total adults in that orphanage. How many kids do you think get hugs,
love, and kisses goodnight? My guess would be none. No birthdays are
celebrated, no gifts given, no parents are around to wish them well or to
encourage them to do well in school. They even have to share the clothes they
have, which is not many. They do not have anyone to love just them.
Yes, I agree that our system needs work; so maybe Harbaugh and I should rally
together to start making those changes. But that will not happen overnight, and
I do not foresee the government changing just because we want to adopt American
children instead of foreign children.
I must ask, how many American children has Harbaugh adopted? I am trying to
change the life of one child, who lived with my family for a few short weeks.
If I can do that, and he just happens to live in Moldova, then so be it.
Maybe if more people like Harbaugh would write to Congress instead of to the
paper, we could change the system. It's a very old, tough system to change,
kind of like an old dog, and no one is willing to fight the fight.
So though I personally will be trying to adopt from Moldova, I will help
Harbaugh if she will get on board to change the American system.
