Can anyone tell me why a company would fight giving unemployment, is it money out of their pockets? I thought it came out of the money I put into every paycheck.

Nope, not unless you are in one of the two or three states that requires employees contribute. Even if those states, the majority of the fund comes from employer taxes. And the simple explanation is that companies fight unemployment benefits, if they feel the employee should not receive them, because the tax rate they have to pay varies based on how many claims and how much money the state has had to pay out to that company's ex-employees.
