I am currently a House Manager for a Clean and Sober house in CA and have been since March of 2005. In exchange for being House Manager, it was verbally agreed upon that I would not have to pay rent in exchange for my services (A standard agreement in Clean and Sober houses). The owner was recieving a monthly stipend from a County organization FOR ME to help me get back on my feet again, help pay for rent(which I had none since taking on the responsibility as House Manager), transportation, etc. In January, I asked the owner of the house if I may have that monthly stipend to purchase a vehicle. She responded yes and has given me the stipend from January 2006 and February 2006. Recently, I asked for the stipend retroactive to March 2005. She refused stating that the money from March 2005 to December 2005 went into the house. The arrangement for all residents in the house is a flat rent that includes all utilities, etc. In essence, my "free rent" seems to be a sham now. Is there any recourse I may take? Thank you!
