I have been told that Iowa changed it's laws and if one spouse requests marriage counseling the courts have to grant a 60 day counseling period. I've also been told that the spouse only has to go one time and say they don't want to do this and that will be the end of it.
Does anyone know how this works?

Each situation is different. I suggest that you speak with your divorce attorney. Theoretically, the court can order the parties to counseling sessions- no one can force you to participate when there but you can be ordered to go. So you ask a question for which there is not really an answer since it varies from case to case.
