Okay-I've been with this company for almost 2 years. It is based out of Alaska and we are the only contract they have in the lower 48 states. Recently, (2 weeks ago) they fired the manager who had been with them for 4 years. (Since the inception of the site) She has had repeated problems getting any support or backing from the home office and was repeatedly given low scores on her reviews from the client because of the home offices lack of involvement. They are to make an appearance every 3 months, per the contract.
Over the course of 2 years, she and I became somewhat friends. Last June, when a rep from the company came down for the expansion project, he offered me 2 promotions-Head of Housekeeping and Assistant Manager. Then in September, the Owner of the company and the Human Resources Manager came down. I had not received a raise for the new positions and was in fact, supervising a woman that was making a dollar more an hour than me. So I asked the owner for a raise and was told it was forth coming.
I received a raise of 2 hours travel time. (what it take to get to work and home) But so did another girl working there and she had not received any promotion. To add insult to injury, when my raise went into affect, the manager took my schedule from 12 hour shifts to 10 hours shifts, so it was like I hadn't received any raise at all. I spoke with my supervisor about this on several occasions and was told that she would gladly give me the 2 hours of work back but that was all she would do. I believed that an hourly raise was more appropriate for the promotions since the other girl had gotten the same raise. So mine seemed as though it were a yearly or "cost of living" raise and not promotion attached.
Well when the manager was let go, (she was the ONLY female manager the company had) the gentlemen who fired her, began a campaign against me. They told me there were no such positions within the company as head of housekeeping and assistant manager. So I was demoted back to housekeeping. When I pointed out that it was their rep that gave me those promotions-when they finally responded-they changed their story to be "there is no such positions in a camp this size"
They also took away my travel time pay raise that was given to me by the owner of the company. Claiming they don't pay travel time pay and if they did, it would be paid to ALL employees, not just 2. The other girl and myself are the only ones who drive in. Everyone else stays on site. I can not because I have a small child to take care of. The company is aware of that fact. We are also the only contractors on the site that don't pay travel pay. Another reason they claimed they don't pay travel time pay is because I could stop at a bar on the way home and then get in a car accident and they could be sued. Well the man they left in charge, makes frequent trips to town. He drinks while there, and drives back to the site. He is driving a rental vehicle (that I was told was rented to him.) When I told upper management about it they told me he was on his off time. But he is considered a 24/7 manager. PLUS-he comes back to the site under the influence of alcohol and that goes against our companys guidlines as well as the clients guidelines.
Then, they give the ordering responsibilities to a cook who has only been with the company for 2-3 months. He gets a substantial raise that he continues to brag about. They also tell me that although I have done the breakfast and bakers jobs before, I can't do them any longer since I don't have a food handlers card. Well neither does this guy or the current breakfast cook. A food handlers card is not required in the state of Colorado.
I also got moved to the new site, down the road from the one I have been working at all along. When I asked the manager about it-he exploded at me. He told me I had put restrictions on my schedule as to what hours I wanted to work and (he said ) "you are GOING back to HOUSEKEEPING!!!" After a year and a half with this company, I finally earned the right to have weekends off with my children and it was understood that if I was needed to work weekends to help out that I would be willing to do that. And I HAVE several times.
Furthermore, this new manager has had meetings with other employees about another issue going on at the site that does involve me but not them. The incident took place before his take over. And they have never interviewed me or the other person involved who could defend me. One of the other people involved has been discussing the issues with the new employees and one of the new women will not even speak to me anymore because of what she has been told. I have to sit by myself for meals because of the constant friction at the site. The manager has not introduced me to other new employees. He also tells the woman I work with things that are pertinent to my day, but he expects her to pass it on. She has been with the company just 3 weeks. When I brought all this up to my supervisors-supervisor, I was told that my supervisor does not have to explain himself or his actions to me. I was told "You are on a need to know basis, and frankly-you don't need to know!" This man also sent an e-mail to my supervisor, which my suupervisor brought up while I was on conference call with the man. He left it on his computer in plain site of me. It said (roughly not exactly) "Once I am done speaking to---me---- and hearing her bull ****! I will give her a warning and and then I want you to have a meeting with everyone else about this not being a Peyton Place!" So the animosity goes all the way up to the main office and my immediate supervisor is being supported in his actions against me.
I would love to hear someones take on this. Is it a hostile work enviroment like I think? Is it sexual discrimination? I should point out that our head cook is female and has been with the company for 7 years. She did not receive any kind of a raise and they have given the male cook the schedule he wanted without first consulting her, even though she is supposed to be running the kitchen. HELP!!!!!
