I just started a new job. The job is at a call center in Ohio. During orientation (or lack there of), the trainer was explaining different kinds of harassment. All forms of harassment were discussed except sexual orientation. This was showed to the class in a power point presentation, and no other forms of information regarding this issue were provided. Since the first day, due to lack of policy there have been many cases of harassment.. for example: race, national origin, and sexual orientation. I was wondering if there is a certain law in Ohio that states that harassment has to be explained in and certain way. Also the company is insisting on making the class play 'games' (icebreakers) that encourage stero typing. For instance a game that we played on the first day... everyone had to stand one by one and introduce themselves and tell 2 truths and one lie. Sound simple enough huh? Well this was the outcome: one man was tease and embarrassed because others thought it was inappropriate for him to be 21 and have four children. Also another many other people were accused of lying about there age. Another man said that he rode a skate board in his spare time and others discussed that that was his lie because of his weight and race. I feel that this games make people focused on race, stero types, sexual orientation, and age. I was wondering if there were any legal action I could take against the company? Seeing that harassment was not fully explained and then these out landish games were forced on us... I wondering what I should do? Thanks

Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation was not explained because it is not illegal in the state of Ohio. Also, you say you were offended by the game played in the class. However, the situation you describe would not be viewed as discrimination. Illegal discrimination is either a pattern of singling out persons on the basis of age, disability, national origin, pregnancy, race, religion or gender or a single heinous action. The game would not be viewed as either.

It sounds like your first day at your employer is not in keeping with your personal beliefs. You may wish to find another employer who better fits your perception of fairness.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
