I need help, I work for a company in Florida that installs Directv. They are taking weekly payroll deductions out of my check along with all the other technicians in our company. They dont tell us why the deductions are taken out. I need to know if my employer can take any monies out of my check without notifiyng me, and without me consenting to the deduction or without me signing for a deduction?
thank you

Unfortunately, Florida has very few wage and hour laws and requiring employee authorization for payroll deductions and not providing pay stubs (with one exception, which doesn't apply in your case) aren't two of them. What do they say when you ask what the deductions are for?

They tell us that they are backcharges for jobs the we are supposed to warranty. My question is that if a job comes back, why arent we given those jobs back for us to look at? How can they just take money away from us like that?

That's just the point. There IS no law in Florida (or Federal) addressing deductions from your paycheck. Laws say what employers MUST do or what they CANNOT do. If the law is silent, then the wage and hour divisions will not get involved. Accordingly, your only alternative is a civil suit based on public policy fairness or another similar reason. You can contact a local attorney for advise.

no they cannot do this unless you signed something or agreed to it at the time of hire. Find out what it is for first and then review your new hire material or company handbook. If you still see nothing then you have the right to get all those funds back

Tyson, We have not signed anything to approve the deduction, nor is there anything in writing.. :)

Tyson, to my knowledge, there is no law in Florida requiring written authorizations for such non-tax, non-court ordered deductions. Do you have a link to such a law to prove your statement?

What else do you want to know? Florida has no law prohibiting it. If you want confirmation, contact the Dept. of Workforce Innovation.
