I am a employee in the State of Texas and my employer scedules me for 1 or 3 hours a week. Can they do that? Are they breaking a law in my state?

Schedules are established by the employer based on the needs of the business. It's a sorry scheduler that sets someone up to work for the same amount of time it takes to drive to or from work, but it's not illegal to do so. If the employer is unable to find anyone to work that schedule, they will doubtless set up something more reasonable. But that doesn't help you.--Sorry

Yes, they can do that. No law is broken.

I was told by the owner of the business that I managed that if an employee worked even a minute they had to be paid for a minimum of 2 hours. (This was in a discussion about labor costs; if someone comes into work and you don't need them even if you send them home right away you have to pay them for 2 hours)
Is this true?
It seemed strange to me at the time, that a state, ummm, commonwealth with Virginia’s pro employer stance on most subjects to legislate this.

There are a few states that have "reporting time" pay laws - my state is one of them. But to the best of my knowledge, VA is not. Patty?

According to my cheat book, Virginia does not have a reporting pay requirement.
