I live in Phoenix, AZ since March 30, 2004 I was working part time for a mental health agency doing substance abuse groups 3 nights a week. On Tuesday afternoon (10/26/04) the clinical director emailed me and said she needed me to work at a different site. I emailed her back asking if the pay would be the same, because different groups have different pay. She never responded and I went to the alternate site. On Wednesday afternoon (10/26/04) the clinical director called and left me a voice mail stating that "my services are no longer needed." I was never late or never failed to show for group. I asked her about my final check and she said she would tell the payroll lady, who is also the owner. When I went back on Wednesday night (10/26/04) there was no check. I'm wondering how long do I have to wait for my final check and can I just be fired for no reason, by voice mail? I know I live in a right to work state but are there no laws to protect me?

The law requires that you must be paid within three working days or the next payday, whichever is sooner. If you don't receive your final check within this time frame, you should file a written complaint with the State Labor Department. Your employer does has the right to terminate you without cause. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Best of luck!
