California overtime.

I had a week where I worked 72 hours in one week. I was working 12 to 16 hour work days.I know I get time and a half after 8, for 4 hours, and then the next four hours I get double. Do I get overtime for over 40 hours, and overtime for working over 8 hours on that day? If so how do you calculate the next four hours, and then the next four hours? Please help. Also it was at $10 an hour in CA.

You get overtime for hours worked over 8 in a day, and overtime if you work more than 40 straight hours in the week.

Thus, if you work 16 hour days, you get 8 hours straight, 4 hours 1.5x, and 4 hours of double time. It will be like this for the first 5 days. Thus, even though on day 3, you have worked more than 40 hours in the week, you still have only worked 24 straight time hours.

After day 5, you have worked 40 straight time hours, so all additional hours must be paid at 1.5x. Thus, assuming you work another 16 hour day, you get the first 12 hours at 1.5x and then next 4 at 2x. You do not compound your overtime. That is, you don't get 3x because it is both over 40 and over 8.

For day 7, you automatically get 1.5x for the first 8 hours and after that you get double time.
