MARSHALL, MINN.
Mom who abandoned newborn sentenced
A Marshall woman who left her newborn in a grocery store restroom was sentenced
Monday to eight years in prison and four years of supervised released.
Stacy Miller, 25, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in what has become
known as the Baby Marshall case.
She left her boy to die in the toilet after giving birth in a women's restroom
at the Marshall Hy-Vee on April 8, 2001.
Authorities didn't learn that Miller was the mother until last summer.
Lyon County District Judge Leland Bush gave Miller credit for about a year she
has served in custody in the Lyon County Jail.
Miller tried to address the court on Monday but broke down crying. Her lawyer,
Cecil Naatz, read a statement from her.
"I know what I did was wrong and I can't find enough words to say how sorry I
am for what I did," Miller's statement said.
